Trase soy deforestation 20260907

File name: TRASE_soy_deforestation_20260907.csv.
Data and description prepared by: Florian Gollnow.
Date: 07.09.2027.

Description

This dataset describes brazil soy deforestation and emissions at municipality level between 2014-2024. Deforestation is derived from Prodes Amazon (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026a), Prodes Cerrado (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026b) and Mapbiomas Collection 11(MapBiomas, 2026) for all other biomes. Soy area is derived from GLAD soy maps (Song et al., 2021) for the southern hemisphere and Mapbiomas collection 11 (MapBiomas, 2026) soy area for the northern hemisphere.

Version

‘q3_2026’ to be released with Brazil soy update 2.7 planned for November 2026

Recommendation for annual soy deforestation reporting

For annual soy deforestation mapping, I recommend using SOY_DEFORESTATION_AT_PLANTING_YEAR_5AMORT. This is a new metric complementing Trase 5 year summed deforestation metric.

Dataset

Column name Description Unit
TRASE_ID ID consisting of “BR-” followed by the official IBGE municipality code
YEAR Reference year
SOY_GLAD_HA Soy area is derived from GLAD soy maps for the southern hemisphere and Mapbiomas collection 11 soy area for the northern hemisphere ha
IBGE_SOY_PROD_TN IBGE soy production (IBGE, 2026) t
IBGE_SOY_AREA IBGE harvested area (IBGE, 2026) ha
SOY_YIELD_TN_HA IBGE soy yield (IBGE, 2026) t/ha
SOY_DEFORESTATION_5_YEAR_TOTAL Soy deforestation (5-year sum) quantifies the area of soy in a given harvest year t that was established on land deforested within the preceding 5-year window [T-5, T-1]. This metric accounts for both forest and non-forest native vegetation conversion by spatially intersecting annual soy classification maps from GLAD (southern hemisphere) (Song et al., 2021) and MapBiomas (northern hemisphere) (MapBiomas, 2026) with territorial deforestation. Territorial deforestation integrates PRODES Amazon (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026a), PRODES Cerrado (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026b), and MapBiomas (MapBiomas, 2026) deforestation outputs. ha
SOY_DEFORESTATION_AT_DEF_YEAR_5AMORT Soy deforestation (at deforestation event, 5-year amortized) quantifies the land area cleared in a given year T that is subsequently converted into soy production within a 3-year forward window [T, T+3]. The total converted area is amortized across a 5-year allocation period starting in the year of deforestation (allocating 20% of the deforestation area annually across years T through T+4). This links land clearing directly to soy production by spatially intersecting territorial deforestation, including forest and non-forest, native vegetation conversions (PRODES Amazon (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026a), PRODES Cerrado (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026b), and MapBiomas (MapBiomas, 2026) ) with GLAD (southern hemisphere) (Song et al., 2021) and MapBiomas (northern hemisphere) (MapBiomas, 2026) annual soy layers and distributes the deforestation outcome across 5 years of production. Disclaimer: please note that the most recent 2 years do not include the full 3 years observation cycle, and hence does not represent all deforestation for soy. ha
SOY_DEFORESTATION_AT_PLANTING_YEAR_5AMORT Soy deforestation (at planting harvest observation, 5-year amortized) tracks new soy production appearing in harvest year T on land deforested within the preceding 3-year window [T-3, T]. Isolating the first year soy is observed post-clearing prevents double-counting of pre-existing soy. The identified conversion area is amortized over a 5-year allocation period starting at the first harvest (spreading 20% of the area annually across years T through T+4). This metric intersects annual soy maps from GLAD (southern hemisphere) (Song et al., 2021) and MapBiomas (northern hemisphere) (MapBiomas, 2026) with territorial deforestation, including forest and non-forest native vegetation conversions from PRODES Amazon (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026a), PRODES Cerrado (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), 2026b), and MapBiomas (MapBiomas, 2026) for all other biomes. ha
CO2_GROSS_EMISSIONS_SOY_DEFORESTATION_5_YEAR_TOTAL Gross greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from “SOY_DEFORESTATION_5_YEAR_TOTAL” , expressed in tonnes of CO₂-equivalent (t CO₂-eq) are determined by calculating the emissions resulting from the removal (land conversion) of native vegetation carbon stocks. Carbon stocks include the above and below ground biomass including necromass. The carbon stocks are based on the values provided by SEEG v12 (SEEG, 2024). Carbon is converted into CO₂-eq by multiplying the values by 3.67, based on the ratio between the molecular weight of C and CO₂. tCO₂-eq

CO2_NET_EMISSIONS_SOY_DEFORESTATION_5_YEAR_TOTAL Net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from “SOY_DEFORESTATION_5_YEAR_TOTAL” , expressed in tonnes of CO₂-equivalent (t CO₂-eq) are determined by calculating the emissions resulting from the removal of native vegetation carbon stocks, due to deforestation for soy, and the carbon stored in soy fields. Carbon stocks include above and below ground biomass including necromass. Both the native vegetation and the soy carbon stocks are based on estimates provided by SEEG v12 (SEEG, 2024).
