Cattle production methods

This documents briefly decribes how we calculated cattle production (ton carcass) per municipality, per year in 2025 . The script updates the methdos developed by Erasmus in
‘TRASE/trase/data/brazil/beef/production/cattle_production_2010_2021.Rmd’ & ‘TRASE/trase/data/brazil/beef/production/cattle_production_5_readme.md’

Cattle production is calculated as the herd size (per muni/yr) * slaughter rate (per state/yr) * carcass weight (per state/yr).

Herd size

is derived from IBGE PPM dataset (s3://trase-storage/brazil/production/statistics/ibge/cattle/cattle_head/silver/tabele3939_municipality_level_extracted_2025-03-11.parquet)

Slaughter rate

is calcualted based on Annualpec slaugher heads extrapolated using IBGE slaughered heads (based on mean difference at State level) and corrected with mean SIGSIF cattle movement between states (mean movements recorded). Tod derive the slaughter rate per state/year, the slaughter number is divided by the annual state herd size.

Carcass weight

  • Carcass weight: derived from IBGE PPM dataset s3://trase-storage/brazil/production/statistics/ibge/cattle/silver/2025-03-state_carcass_weights.parquet

Results

  • Finally, the herd size (PPM), slaughter rate (composite), and carcass weight (IBGE) are multiplied to estimate production.
  • The production is reported both on an annual (CW_PRODUCTION_TONS) and lifecycle (CW_PRODUCTION_TONS_5_YR) basis.
