QA of Pasture Indicator
This document presents an assessment of Trase’s indicators, comparing MapBiomas data from collections 9 and 10 (C9 and C10), and evaluates the impact of these differences on Trase’s indicators.
Pasture Area Indicator
The pasture area in Brazil shrank in C10 compared to C9, at an average of 6.3 million hectares from 2011-2023. This decrease was particularly noticeable in the states of Pará (1.1 Mha), Maranhão (1 Mha) and Minas Gerais (0.8 Mha), though Distrito Federal and Rio Grande do Sul presented a small increase.

Top 5 States with the Largest Decrease in Pasture Area
| State | Avg. C9 (Mha) | Avg. C10 (Mha) | Avg. Decrease (Mha) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pará | 19.6 | 18.6 | 1.1 |
| Maranhão | 8.4 | 7.4 | 1.0 |
| Minas Gerais | 21.7 | 20.8 | 0.8 |
| Mato Grosso | 20.8 | 20.2 | 0.5 |
| Bahia | 15.5 | 15.0 | 0.4 |
How does this decrease change the pasture deforestation indicator ?
The decrease in pasture area does not affect the trend of pasture deforestation, in both versions we see the same behavior, although with differences. The period 2011-2015 holds major differences with rates of deforestation varying from 1 Mha to 205 Kha.

Below, we highlight the top states with the highest pasture deforestation in 2011 for both C9 and C10. Some notable changes in rankings are observed: Tocantins, which held the third position in C9, is replaced by Bahia in C10, while Goiás, previously in fifth place, is replaced by Rondônia. The ordering and deforestation values of other states also show small variations between the two collections.
| Top 5 States (C9) | Pasture Def. C9 (Mha) | Top 5 States (C10) | Pasture Def. C10 (Mha) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pará | 1.3 | Pará | 1.2 |
| Mato Grosso | 0.96 | Mato Grosso | 0.78 |
| Tocantins | 0.54 | Bahia | 0.53 |
| Minas Gerais | 0.52 | Minas Gerais | 0.31 |
| Goiás | 0.48 | Rondônia | 0.28 |
In the recent years (2021–2023), the ranking order remains unchanged, only the deforestation amounts differ.
Conclusions
In summary, although pasture areas in Brazil appear smaller in C10 compared to C9, the overall trends in pasture extent and pasture-related deforestation remain consistent across datasets. The differences are mainly quantitative, with only slight shifts in state rankings in specific years, and do not alter the broader dynamics captured by the indicators. Moreover, the last two years show clearer improvements, correcting odd trends previously observed in states such as Ceará, Pernambuco, and Paraíba.
