Counts of company groups on selected contexts and years

September 1, 2025

This report provides counts of exporter and importer company groups across selected country/commodity contexts and years.

This metric is part of a MEL / KPI used for an impact review and [result framework of GC for 2023])https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1syK4ZmjdCI1X8fvV5Q6pc_dTC2TzlB4a534ISiYdNXY/edit?gid=0#gid=0_, and is also included in the 2025 - 2030 Trase’s strategy document (page 9 under “Trase’s impact in numbers”, “Number of commodity trading companies mapped by Trase”).

Note that higher numbers don’t directly indicate an increase of more companies being analyzed or improvement in the analysis. However, it gives a sense of number of companies included in our final results. Also, the number of companies depends on the contexts being included in the analysis and the years of interest:

  • While we have over 480,000 company names in our database as of 2025 - mostly coming from trading data, many of these company names might not be included in the final data: they might be filtered out if they trade small quantities, be merged if they are part of a same company but with different spellings, be part of a same company group, or may be part of a context that was not published.
  • Usually, the most significant traders, responsible for the great majority of trade, are a small percentage of the total number of companies.

Selected contexts for analysis

From all the contexts, we consider the following for tracking throughout time:

  • Argentina soy
  • Bolivia soy
  • Brazil beef, corn, and soy
  • Cote d’Ivoire cocoa
  • Indonesia palm oil and wood pulp
  • Paraguay beef, corn and soy

Tracking company groups available at different times

Each year we update different contexts with new data, and sometimes also make methodological adjustments.

The years for which data are available vary by context and version, usually depending on the availability and quality of the underlying source data. As a result, an update in a given year may not necessarily include data from the immediately preceding year.

Which contexts and versions are available at a given point in time can be tracked through the changelog of context updates.

In the following subsections, we present the total number of company groups available up to 2023 and 2024. For these years, we show company counts in two ways:

  • From 2013 onwards, to remain consistent with the “Trase at 10” reports, which (for Brazil soy in particular) only included data from 2013 onwards.
  • Across all available years, for completeness.

Although Brazil soy has a composite model that includes data back to 2004, the vast majority of contexts only have data from 2013 onwards, or from even later years.
