The ANA dataset of sectoral water use
The irrigation data per municipality was obtained from the ANA
dataset on sectoral water use, available at the following link.
This dataset presents water consumption for several sectors per
microbasin and per municipality, between 1930 and 2017 (estimated use)
and between 2018 and 2030 (projected use).
The dataset also presents data for irrigation water consumption, and
return flows. The graphs below show the general outlook on the data.



Some limitations of this dataset:
- It presents only aggregated irrigation data per municipality -
therefore we cannot know for certain what crop is being irrigated with
those volumes.
The Mapbiomas data on irrigated area and soy production
For this, two Mapbiomas datasets were used: The mapbiomas land cover
dataset (Collection 7) and irrigation dataset (1.1.0 - Irrigated
Agriculture - Collection 6.0).
The irrigated agriculture dataset contains 3 classes, representing
different types of irrigation systems: Center Pivot, Other systems, and
Rice irrigation system.
By crossing the land cover from Mapbiomas and the irrigation areas,
we can obtain an idea of which crops are being irrigated by which
systems, and where.



Some limitations of this dataset:
- As seen in the figure above, some soybean area is classified as
present in areas with rice inundation systems. This is probably due to
an error in classification.
- There is still no data about Cotton, which is one of the major
irrigated crops in center pivot systems. It is safe to assume that a
large part of the soybean irrigated area is also irrigated safrinha
cotton area.
- This data only gives us irrigated area per crop per municipality,
and not necessarily volume of irrigated water.
Generating output
A table was written in S3 with the data above, in the file
“traseh2o/data/irrigation/ana-mapbiomas-data.csv”.
The table contains the following columns:
- year
- trase_id: The ID of each municipality
- area_soy_pivot: the area of soy that is irrigated by center pivot
systems in that municipality and year. Obtained from mapbiomas maps of
land cover and irrigation. Unit: square meters.
- area_total_pivot: the area that is irrigated by center pivot systems
in that municipality and year. Obtained from mapbiomas maps of
irrigation. Unit: square meters.
- area_total: the area that is irrigated in that municipality and
year. Obtained from mapbiomas maps of irrigation. Unit: square
meters.
- irr_withdrawal_m3_s: water withdrawal per year in that municipality,
destined for irrigation. Obtained from the ANA database.
- irr_consumption_m3_s: water consumption per year in that
municipality, for irrigation. Obtained from the ANA database.
- irr_return_m3_s: water return flows related to irrigation, per
municipality per year. Obtained from the ANA database.
