Comparing cocoa land cover maps

Cocoa land cover maps we have :
- Joint Research Centre (JRC)’s cocoa map for 2019, CIV and GHA, 10m resolution, only the sourthern part of the country (Abu et al. 2021 article and link to download rasters for Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana). According to the climatically most suitable cocoa areas (see Fig. 1 in article), six regions in Ghana (Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Volta and Western) and nine districts in Cote d’Ivoire (Abidjan, Bas-Sassandra, Como´e, Goh-Djiboua, Lacs, Lagunes, Montagnes, Sassandra-Marahou´e, Yamoussoukro) were mapped and evaluated for their cocoa plantations (ref: Laderach et al., 2013).
The RF model-based cocoa map achieved 82.89% producer’s and 62.22% user’s accuracy, detecting 3.69 million hectares (Mha) of cocoa plantations for Cote d Ivoire and 2.15 Mha for Ghana, respectively. In comparison, the FAO estimates a total cocoa area at 4Mha in Cote d Ivoire and 1.78Mha in Ghana.

Note : the spatial resolution of both JRC and ETH maps are 10 m, but the map displays ~1km resolution pixels.
Total cocoa area in Côte d’Ivoire
ETH maps cocoa over the entire country, while JRC maps only the southern part of the country. Cocoa area calculated on GEE.

- ETH map: 4.362587 Mha
- JRC map: 3.684919 Mha (omitting ‘unsuitable’ areas)
- VIVID map: 2.778997 Mha
