IGBE Animal Slaughter Quarterly Survey

The amount (head count and weight) of slaughtered Beef, Pigs, and Chicken. The data is quarterly and broken down per state.

The data for 2019 was downloaded by Harry on Wednesday 2st December 2020 from the SIDRA web portal. The API was not used because I heard rumours from the cocoa team that it isn't reliable...

How to download the data

Here the pages used:

  • Beef: https://sidra.ibge.gov.br/tabela/1092 (not yet downloaded)
  • Pigs: https://sidra.ibge.gov.br/tabela/1093
  • Chicken: https://sidra.ibge.gov.br/tabela/1094

The following options were selected:

  • Variável [6/6]: all options
  • Referência temporal [4/4]: all options
  • Tipo de inspeção [4/4]: all options*
  • Trimestre [4/94]: only the 2019 quarters
  • Unidade Territorial [27/27]: all options

Then on the download modal:

  • Format XLSX (CSV produced an error)
  • Rankear valores: Nao aplicar
  • All checkboxes ticked
  • Imediato (the data is small and can be downloaded synchronously)

Notes

The following notes were copied from the SIDRA portal:

  • The data released comes from establishments that are under federal health inspection.

  • There are three kinds of insepction: federal (SIF), state (SIE), and munical (SIM). These represent three inspection certifications, which take the form of "stamps" that are attached to the meat. Only the federal inspection certificate permits export from the country. A SIF supersedes a SIE, and a SIE supersedes a SIM, so each meat product will only have one of these certifications.

  • Data from Federation Units with less than 3 informants are unidentified with the character X.

  • Pigs - male or female pigs of any age, regardless of purpose.

  • Chickens - young birds, male or female, usually up to 60 days old. Includes "frangões", improvement results. Adult animals (discarded laying hens, roosters) should also be considered in this item.

  • Cattle - domestic cattle, divided into categories according to sex and age:

    • Ox - adult male bovine, 2 years of age or older. Includes non-castrated male (bull).

    • Cow - adult female bovine, 2 years of age or older, regardless of whether she has given birth or not.

    • Steer - young male bovine, less than 2 years old. Includes calf, calf and calf (early or not).

    • Heifer - young female bovine, less than 2 years old. Includes veal, heifer and heifer (early or not).

  • Carcass Weight - hot carcass weight (in Kg), understood as carcass: the slaughtered animal, formed from muscle masses and bones, devoid of head, mocotós, tail, leather, thoracic and abdominal organs and viscera, technically prepared. In chickens, the removal of the kidneys, feet, neck and head is optional. In pigs, the carcass may or may not include leather, head and feet.
