This script takes the calculated emission factors for CH4 (enteric, manure) and N2O (manure) from MCTI (2020a, b) following two approaches to calculating the animal population considering the following approaches to estimate the population breakdown: + IBGE Census (2006) (with and without dairy cows) (MCTI/Census approach) + Anualpec (2017) (with dairy cows) (Anuapec approach)
Note that the factors are used for the 2010-2019 period as they rely on the average state level Also note that the factors for 2010 should be recalculated with the 2007-2010 liveweights from MCTI; but we can just assume similar LW as in 2017 to simplification.
In the case of enteric methane, we provide a range of CH4 emissions based on the factor of Ca between 0.17 and 0.36 as a sensitivity analysis.
We also separate the total amount of emissions use for cattle with and without bulls to derive GhG emissions of production and consumption (we assume that bulls will not be slaughtered to beef in our research).
N2O emission results are different compared to SEEG who are now a more reliable source of GhG emission calculations. The difference between their method and ours, is that we include emissions from cattle in pasture while their only consider confined animals as being the source of emissions. They also do not include emissions from leaching which we include.
We can now summarise the state-level and country-level emissions in Mtonnes of the live cattle (including bulls). First we calculate the emissions of CH4 and N2O without converting to CO2-eq.
