Soy Area Comparison Report

Comparison of MapBiomas, GLAD (Song et al. 2021), and IBGE SIDRA soy planted area estimates for Brazil. Annual estimates of total planted area between 2002 and 2024.

1. National time series (2002-2024)

Soy planted area time series (2002-2024) in Brazil based on MapBiomas, Song et al. (2021), and IBGE PAM SIDRA. Compare national planted area totals over time and highlight differences relative to the IBGE planted area reference. The data show that MapBiomas and GLAD have similar temporal correlation with IBGE SIDRA planted area.

R2 MapBiomas vs IBGE planted area: XX | R2 GLAD vs IBGE planted area: XX

2. Biome-level differences

Compare planted area totals by biome and quantify differences relative to IBGE planted area. Overall, GLAD reports a larger planted soy area in recent years compared with MapBiomas (2023 and 2024). Between 2020 and 2022, planted area is underestimated in both MapBiomas and GLAD, particularly in MapBiomas.

3. State-level differences

Top states by absolute difference relative to IBGE planted area for the selected year. MT tends to have a significantly underestimated planted soy area in satellite surveys in recent years. The underestimation is expected, especially in states with double-cropping.

4. Municipality-level map

Spatial differences in soy planted area between datasets at municipal level. Colours show percentage differences, while hover text reports absolute planted area differences. It is important to highlight that, especially in MT, the area of planted soy tends to be much lower in satellite surveys (GLAD and MapBiomas). This behaviour may be related to the record low production in the 2023-24 crop season, which is not captured in IBGE PAM surveys.

5. Municipality-level scatter comparison

Compare municipal soy planted area between datasets using scatter plots.
